Ronan O'Gara Bibliography
Ronan John Ross O'Gara was born 7 March 1977, in San Diego, California, United States and is an Irish former rugby union player, who played fly-half for both Ireland and Munster. He is Ireland's second most-capped player, with 128 caps, second behind Brian O'Driscoll with 133 and the fourth most-capped in rugby union history. O'Gara has captained Munster, Ireland, and the British and Irish Lions and won four Triple Crowns with Ireland and two Heineken Cups with Munster. O'Gara now coaches Top 14 team Racing 92 in Paris, where he lives.
Ronan O'Gara is the all-time highest points scorer for Ireland and is the fourth highest points scorer in the history of International Rugby Union. He has scored more tries for Ireland than any other fly-half in history. O'Gara is Munster's all-time leading points scorer with 2,625 points, and also holds the Heineken Cup record for points with 1,365 points.
Ronan O'Gara scored several match-winning dropped goals for Ireland, including in the 78th minute of the Wales vs Ireland match in the 2009 Six Nations Championship to secure the Grand Slam and in the 78th minute of the Italy vs Ireland match in the 2011 Six Nations Championship, which ensured Ireland avoided a first defeat to Italy in the Six Nations.
He went on three British Lions Tours, the 2001 Australian tour, 2005 New Zealand Tour and the 2009 South African Tour and won two caps for the British Lions, during his three tours.
O'Gara received his first Lions call-up for the tour to Australia in 2001. He played in four tour games, against Western Australia, NSW Waratahs, NSW Country Districts and ACT Brumbies, scoring 26 points overall. O'Gara was a substitute in the test side that played Australia A. In the game against NSW Waratahs, O'Gara was involved in an off the ball incident with Duncan McRae, which resulted in O'Gara needing eight stitches around his eye and McRae being sent off and later banned for 7 weeks. He did not win a full test cap during this tour, but eventually won his first Lions test cap on the 2005 Tour to New Zealand, coming on as a replacement in the third test. His final Lions Test cap was on the 2009 Tour to South Africa, where he again came off the bench in the second test.
2001 British Lions Australian Tour
The 2001 British and Irish Lions tour to Australia was a series of matches played by the British and Irish Lions rugby union team in Australia. The team was captained by Martin Johnson, who became the first and so far only man to lead the Lions on two tours. The coach was New Zealander Graham Henry. After winning the first of their matches against Australia, the Lions lost the remaining two matches of the test series. This was the first time that Australia defeated the Lions in a series. The tour was noted for tension between the test squad and the midweek squad as well as controversial newspaper columns written by scrum-halves Matt Dawson and Austin Healey accusing the coaching staff of the poor scheduling and training regimes and lack of team spirit.
