Kenny Rogers (born 21 August 1938, died 20 March 2020) was an American singer, songwriter and actor, born in Houston, Texas. Although rooted in country music, he achieved broad international success through crossover hits that reached pop audiences. Rogers is notable for narrative-driven songs such as “The Gambler” and “Lucille”, for major duet recordings, and for a career that helped expand the mainstream reach of country music from the 1970s onwards.

Rogers began performing in the late 1950s and early 1960s and worked in several groups before gaining recognition with the First Edition, whose late 1960s recordings crossed between pop, rock and country. He moved into a solo career in the 1970s, developing a style that blended country storytelling with pop production. His early solo success included “Lucille” (1977), which brought major chart attention and established him as a leading country vocalist.

His peak period arrived in the late 1970s and 1980s with a run of internationally successful singles and albums. “The Gambler” (1978–79) became his signature recording and won major industry recognition, and he followed with further hits including “Coward of the County” and “She Believes in Me”. In 1980, “Lady”, written and produced by Lionel Richie, became a major crossover success. Rogers also recorded the duet “Islands in the Stream” (1983) with Dolly Parton, written by the Bee Gees, which topped the US pop chart and became one of the best-known duets of its era.

In later decades, Rogers maintained a recording and touring schedule while also developing an acting career, including television films based on The Gambler character and other dramatic roles. He continued releasing albums into the 2000s and 2010s and embarked on a farewell period of touring before retiring from full-scale touring. Outside music, he was involved in business ventures and public projects, including the founding of the restaurant chain Kenny Rogers Roasters in 1991.

Rogers was frequently described as one of the best-selling country artists, with reported worldwide album sales exceeding 100 million. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2013 and received multiple major awards during his career, including Grammy Awards. His work remains influential in country-pop crossover music, and “The Gambler” continues to be referenced as a defining example of the modern country story song.
