Britney Spears (born Britney Jean Spears, 2 December 1981, McComb, Mississippi, United States) is an American singer, dancer and actress associated with pop music. Rising to prominence as a teenager at the end of the 1990s, she became one of the most recognisable figures of the modern pop era and is noted for her impact on the sound and presentation of mainstream pop in the early 2000s.

Spears grew up in Kentwood, Louisiana, and performed in talent contests and stage productions as a child. She appeared on television, including The Mickey Mouse Club in the early 1990s, before securing a recording contract in the late 1990s. Her debut single “...Baby One More Time” (1998) and the album of the same name (1999) became international successes, followed by the album Oops!... I Did It Again (2000). These releases established her as a leading teen-pop artist and produced further hit singles.

Her most commercially dominant period continued through the early 2000s with the albums Britney (2001) and In the Zone (2003), which reflected a shift towards more contemporary R&B and dance-pop influences. Singles such as “I’m a Slave 4 U”, “Toxic” and “Everytime” were central to her worldwide profile, and “Toxic” won the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Spears’ music videos, touring and media visibility contributed to the broader pop culture conversation around celebrity, fashion and performance during this period.

From the mid-2000s onwards, Spears released a series of albums that documented changing musical trends and her own career reinvention, including Blackout (2007), Circus (2008) and Femme Fatale (2011). She later undertook long-running live performance projects, including a Las Vegas residency, and continued to collaborate with other artists. In the 2020s she returned to recording through selected releases and participated in high-profile collaborations, alongside publishing an autobiographical memoir.

Spears has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, placing her among the best-selling music artists of all time. In addition to her Grammy Award, she has received a wide range of industry honours and chart achievements across multiple decades. Her influence can be seen in later generations of pop performers, particularly in the intersection of choreography, visual presentation and radio-focused pop songwriting.
