Passenger
Passenger (Michael David Rosenberg) was born on 17 May 1984 in Brighton, England. He is an English singer-songwriter whose music is commonly described as indie folk and folk rock. Rosenberg is notable for the international success of the single “Let Her Go” and for a large catalogue of studio albums released under the Passenger name.
Rosenberg began writing and performing songs as a teenager and formed the band Passenger in Brighton and Hove in the early 2000s. The group released an album, Wicked Man’s Rest (2007), before dissolving, after which Rosenberg retained the Passenger name for his solo career. He continued developing an audience through touring and street performance, releasing albums independently and building momentum through live shows.
Passenger’s breakthrough came with “Let Her Go”, released in 2012 as a single from the album All the Little Lights. The song became a sleeper hit internationally, reaching number one in many countries and rising to number two on the UK Singles Chart. All the Little Lights broadened his profile beyond the UK and established Passenger as a global touring artist, with the song remaining his most recognised recording.
In the years that followed, Rosenberg released further studio albums at a steady pace, often centred on acoustic songwriting and touring circuits across Europe, North America and Australasia. His later releases included Birds That Flew and Ships That Sailed (2022), continuing a pattern of frequent recording and touring. Collaborations and guest musicians featured across his albums, while the Passenger project remained primarily a solo vehicle.
Passenger’s work has been recognised through songwriting and performance metrics as well as industry awards. “Let Her Go” received a BRIT Award nomination and won an Ivor Novello Award for Most Performed Work, reflecting its sustained airplay. Rosenberg’s long-term popularity has been supported by streaming audiences and live performance, with his discography extending well beyond the single that first brought him mainstream attention.
