Blur
Blur are an English rock band formed in London in 1988. The band’s principal members are Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree. Emerging from late-1980s indie and alternative scenes, Blur became closely associated with 1990s Britpop and later expanded into looser, more experimental rock, maintaining a prominent place in British popular music across several reunions and new releases.
The group began releasing music in the early 1990s, with their debut album Leisure (1991) achieving moderate success. Their breakthrough arrived with Modern Life Is Rubbish (1993) and Parklife (1994), which positioned Blur at the centre of a renewed UK guitar-pop movement. Parklife produced major singles including “Girls & Boys” and “Parklife” and established the band’s reputation for character-based songwriting and distinctly English subject matter.
Blur’s peak commercial period came in the mid-1990s with The Great Escape (1995) and a run of high-profile singles and chart achievements. In 1997 they shifted sound with the self-titled album Blur, led by “Song 2”, which achieved significant international exposure and broadened their audience beyond the UK. The band continued to evolve on 13 (1999), exploring more personal themes and experimental production, and maintained critical attention through stylistic changes rather than a single consistent formula.
In the 2000s Blur’s activity became more intermittent as members pursued separate projects, including Albarn’s work with Gorillaz. The band released Think Tank (2003), then reconvened periodically for live performances and reunion tours. They returned with The Magic Whip (2015), recorded after live dates in Asia, and later released The Ballad of Darren (2023), reflecting ongoing interest in new material alongside established catalogue performances.
Blur have sold many millions of records and remain one of the defining British bands of the 1990s. They have received multiple major UK music awards during their career and have been repeatedly cited as influential in shaping British indie and pop-rock songwriting. Their legacy rests on an ability to reflect contemporary British life in lyrics, to shift stylistically across albums, and to maintain enduring public recognition for both their Britpop-era singles and later work.
