Blue
Blue are an English vocal group formed in London in 2000. The quartet consists of Antony Costa, Duncan James, Lee Ryan and Simon Webbe. Working primarily in pop and R&B-influenced styles, Blue achieved significant UK and European chart success in the early 2000s and became one of the most prominent British boy bands of their era.
The group signed to Innocent Records and quickly established themselves with debut singles including “All Rise” (2001) and “Too Close” (2001). Their first album, All Rise (2001), was followed by One Love (2002), both of which produced multiple hit singles and secured the band regular television and touring exposure. Blue’s early success was supported by an emphasis on strong vocal harmonies and ballad-driven releases alongside uptempo pop tracks.
Their peak period extended through the early to mid-2000s with albums such as Guilty (2003) and a run of widely recognised singles including “If You Come Back”, “Fly By II” and the collaboration “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word” with Elton John. The group’s releases consistently placed in the upper reaches of the UK charts during this time, and they became a regular presence on European pop radio. Their sound combined contemporary R&B production with a more traditional boy-band focus on harmony and romantic themes.
After a period of reduced activity and individual projects, Blue reunited in the late 2000s and returned to recording and touring. They represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011 with “I Can”. The band continued to release albums in the 2010s, including Roulette (2013) and Colours (2015), and later issued Heart & Soul (2022), reflecting a shift towards adult-pop songwriting while maintaining their established vocal blend.
Blue’s record sales have been reported in the multi-million range worldwide, though exact totals vary across sources and territories. The group have received industry nominations and awards recognition associated with their early-2000s chart presence. Their long-term profile has been sustained through touring, compilation releases and continued radio familiarity of their best-known singles, positioning them as a continuing reference point for British pop vocal groups of the period.
