Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac are a British-American rock band formed in London, England, in 1967. The group was founded by guitarist Peter Green, drummer Mick Fleetwood, and bassist John McVie, with Christine McVie and later Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks among the best-known members. Their music has encompassed blues, rock and pop. They are notable for major commercial success in the 1970s and for producing one of the best-selling albums in recording history.
Fleetwood Mac began as a blues band within the late-1960s British blues movement. Early successes included UK charting singles and albums, with “Albatross” (1968) reaching number one in the UK and helping establish a wider audience. As line-ups changed through the late 1960s and early 1970s, the band’s sound moved away from blues towards more melodic rock, with albums such as Future Games (1971) and Bare Trees (1972) reflecting a transition period.
The band’s peak commercial period began after Buckingham and Nicks joined in 1975, coinciding with a shift towards polished pop-rock songwriting and vocal harmonies. Fleetwood Mac (1975) produced major singles and reached number one in the United States. Rumours (1977) became a global phenomenon, generating hits including “Go Your Own Way”, “Dreams” and “Don’t Stop”, and winning the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The follow-up double album Tusk (1979) expanded their style while maintaining significant sales.
Fleetwood Mac continued through the 1980s and 1990s with further albums, touring and intermittent breaks, alongside successful solo careers for several members. The band’s later projects included major reunion tours and the album Say You Will (2003). Christine McVie rejoined for touring in the 2010s, while Buckingham’s departure in 2018 resulted in a revised live line-up. The group’s activity has largely centred on live performance and catalog work in later years.
Fleetwood Mac have sold over 120 million records worldwide. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, and Rumours remains a sustained reference point for pop-rock production, songwriting and ensemble performance. Their long-term influence is evident in later vocal groups and rock bands that adopted harmony-led arrangements and confessional songwriting, and their best-known songs continue to be widely played across multiple generations of listeners.
