Jimmy Nail (birth name James Michael Patrick Aloysius Bradford, born 16 March 1954) is an English actor, singer-songwriter and producer, born in Newcastle upon Tyne. He is best known for leading roles in British television drama during the 1980s and 1990s and for a brief but high-profile period of chart success as a recording artist. Nail is notable for his work in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, Spender and Crocodile Shoes, and for his 1992 UK number-one single “Ain’t No Doubt”.
Nail emerged from the Newcastle music and theatre scene and began gaining national recognition in the early 1980s. His breakthrough acting role came as Leonard “Oz” Osborne in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (1983–1986), a series that became widely watched in the UK. As his profile grew, he took on further television work and became associated with dramas centred on working-class life in the north east of England.
In the early 1990s, Nail starred in Spender (1991–1993), in which he played the title role of an undercover police officer. He achieved his most significant music success in 1992, when “Ain’t No Doubt” reached number one in the UK singles chart, bringing him mainstream attention as a vocalist as well as an actor. During the mid-1990s he led the series Crocodile Shoes (1994–1996), combining acting with a role that incorporated music into the narrative, and he also appeared as AgustĂn Magaldi in the film Evita (1996).
After the 1990s, Nail worked more intermittently on screen, with appearances and projects that included writing and production credits as well as acting roles. He has also been associated with charitable and cultural events linked to Newcastle, and he has periodically returned to public performance and television work after extended breaks from regular acting.
Nail’s legacy rests primarily on his contribution to popular British television drama and on a small number of widely remembered performances. “Ain’t No Doubt” remains his best-known recording and is frequently referenced in retrospectives of early 1990s UK chart music. His television roles, particularly in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and Spender, continue to be repeated and discussed as examples of influential British drama from the period.
