Geneviève Alison Jane Moyet MBE, known professionally as Alison Moyet, was born on 18 June 1961 in Billericay, Essex. She is an English singer and songwriter best known for her powerful contralto voice and her work in both synth-pop and alternative music. Moyet first rose to prominence in the early 1980s as one half of the electronic duo Yazoo.

Yazoo formed in 1981 alongside former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke. The duo achieved immediate success with their debut album, Upstairs at Eric’s (1982), which reached number two on the UK Albums Chart and featured hit singles such as “Only You” and “Don’t Go”. Their second album, You and Me Both (1983), reached number one in the UK before the duo split later that year.

Following the dissolution of Yazoo, Alison Moyet embarked on a successful solo career. Her debut solo album, Alf (1984), was a major commercial success, reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart and producing several hit singles, including “All Cried Out” and “Love Resurrection”. She continued her success throughout the 1980s with albums such as Raindancing (1987) and Hoodoo (1991), establishing herself as one of the UK’s leading female vocalists of the era.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Moyet explored a broader range of musical styles, moving away from mainstream pop towards more experimental and alternative sounds. Albums such as Hometime (2002) and Voice (2004) were well received critically and demonstrated her versatility as an artist. She later returned to electronic music with releases including The Minutes (2013) and Other (2017).

Alison Moyet has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including multiple Brit Awards, and in 2024 she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to music. She has sold over 23 million records worldwide and continues to record and perform to acclaim.

With a career spanning more than four decades, Alison Moyet remains an influential figure in British music. Her distinctive voice and evolving musical approach have earned her lasting respect from both audiences and critics.
