Chris de Burgh (born Christopher John Davison, 15 October 1948, Venado Tuerto, Santa Fe, Argentina) is a British-Irish singer-songwriter whose music blends pop, rock and folk influences. Raised largely in Ireland and educated in Britain, he built a career as a touring songwriter before achieving major international chart success in the 1980s. He is best known for the ballad “The Lady in Red”.

De Burgh grew up in several countries due to his father’s diplomatic work and later based himself in Ireland, where he began performing and writing songs. After signing to A&M Records, he released his debut album Far Beyond These Castle Walls (1974) and built an audience through extensive live work. His early catalogue included albums such as Spanish Train and Other Stories (1975), which established his narrative songwriting style, and he gained seasonal radio attention with “A Spaceman Came Travelling” (1975), later reissued in different markets.

His commercial peak came with the album Into the Light (1986). The record was driven by “The Lady in Red”, which became a major international hit and introduced his music to a broader mainstream pop audience. Through the late 1980s he continued to release successful studio albums, including Flying Colours (1988), and maintained a strong touring schedule, with particular popularity in parts of Europe. His songwriting during this period often combined romantic themes with story-based lyrics and accessible pop arrangements.

From the 1990s onwards de Burgh continued to record and tour, releasing a steady sequence of studio albums while revisiting earlier material in live settings. He collaborated with other musicians and remained active on the European concert circuit, with later projects ranging from reflective singer-songwriter material to more contemporary pop production. Alongside music, he has been involved in charity work and has occasionally appeared in television and radio programmes connected to his career and repertoire.

De Burgh’s recordings have sold more than 45 million copies worldwide. His best-known songs have remained in circulation through radio, compilation albums and cover versions, contributing to his long-term international recognition. While “The Lady in Red” is his signature hit, his wider catalogue and sustained touring have supported a multi-decade career with continuing popularity, particularly in the United Kingdom and continental Europe.
