Duffy (born Aimée Anne Duffy, 23 June 1984, Bangor, Gwynedd, Wales) is a Welsh singer-songwriter and actress associated with soul-influenced pop. She rose to international prominence in the late 2000s during a wider revival of retro soul and classic pop styles. Duffy is best known for her debut album Rockferry and its lead single “Mercy”.

Duffy began performing in Wales as a teenager and gained early public attention through television talent competitions. After relocating to London, she recorded demo material and released early songs that helped her secure a major-label deal. Her breakthrough came with “Mercy” (2008), which became a major hit and introduced her distinctive vocal style, followed by the release of Rockferry (2008).

Rockferry became one of the best-selling albums in the UK in 2008 and achieved substantial international sales, with singles including “Warwick Avenue” and “Rain on Your Parade”. Duffy received major industry recognition for the album, including a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album and Brit Awards including British Female Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act and British Album of the Year. Her success positioned her alongside other contemporary British artists who drew on 1960s soul and pop influences while working within modern production.

Duffy released her second studio album, Endlessly, in 2010, exploring a broader range of styles and arrangements. She also undertook acting work, including a role in the film Patagonia (2010) and later appearances in other projects. Following this period she largely withdrew from public music activity for several years, with only limited releases and public statements.

Duffy’s record sales have been strongly associated with the worldwide performance of Rockferry, reported to have sold over seven million copies. Her main honours remain centred on her late-2000s breakthrough and the awards it received. Although her recording output has been comparatively small, Rockferry continues to be cited as a significant UK album of its era and remains a reference point in discussions of 21st-century British soul-pop.
