Jive Bunny
Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers are a British novelty pop act originating in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England, and active from 1989 onwards. The project is notable for its late-1980s chart dominance with sample-based medleys and for popularising the “megamix” format in UK pop at a mass-market level.
The act emerged from DJ and production work connected to “Swing the Mood”, which was developed from a club-style mix into a commercial single by producers associated with the Mastermix service. Using sampling and synthesisers to link excerpts from early rock ’n’ roll and big band recordings, the project quickly moved from specialist DJ culture into mainstream chart success.
Jive Bunny’s peak came in 1989, when the act achieved three consecutive UK number one singles: “Swing the Mood”, “That’s What I Like”, and “Let’s Party”. “Swing the Mood” became one of the biggest-selling songs of that year in the UK, and the act placed multiple entries in the singles chart during its early run.Following the initial burst of chart success, Jive Bunny continued releasing further megamix-style singles into the early 1990s, while the concept remained tied to nostalgia for 1950s and early-1960s pop and rock. The act’s identity also relied on the cartoon rabbit character used in videos and promotions, distinguishing it from artist-led band formats.
Jive Bunny’s legacy lies in its role as a defining example of late-1980s sample-based novelty pop and in the way its medley approach anticipated later mainstream uses of mash-ups and compilation-style production. Its brief but intense chart impact remains a widely referenced moment in UK pop chart history.
