Elvis Costello
Elvis Costello (born Declan Patrick MacManus, 25 August 1954, London, England) is an English singer-songwriter, guitarist and record producer whose work spans punk, new wave, pop, rock, country and jazz. Emerging during the late 1970s, he became known for sharp lyric writing and stylistic range. Costello is notable for a long and varied recording career that has influenced modern songwriting and band-based rock performance.
Costello grew up in a musical family and worked in office jobs while performing in pub and club settings. In the mid-1970s he began recording and signed to Stiff Records, releasing his debut album My Aim Is True (1977), which included songs such as “Alison”. His early breakthrough as a major UK artist came with recordings made with the Attractions, beginning with This Year’s Model (1978), which established his combination of fast, guitar-driven arrangements and observational lyrics.
His peak period in terms of influence and critical profile extended from the late 1970s into the early 1980s. Albums such as Armed Forces (1979) and Imperial Bedroom (1982) expanded his musical approach while maintaining a focus on concise songwriting, and singles including “Oliver’s Army” became lasting parts of his catalogue. Costello’s work during this era is frequently cited in accounts of post-punk and new wave for its lyricism, vocal style and willingness to absorb diverse influences within a pop-song framework.
From the mid-1980s onwards Costello continued to move between styles, recording rock material as well as projects rooted in country, soul and orchestral pop. He collaborated with a wide range of artists and composers, including the late-1990s partnership with Burt Bacharach that produced the album Painted from Memory (1998). In later decades he continued recording with bands such as the Imposters and released further studio albums while maintaining an active touring career.
Costello was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003 and into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006, reflecting recognition for both performance and composition. His long-term influence is often discussed in relation to literate pop songwriting and genre-crossing recording careers that followed the late-1970s punk and new wave era. His songs continue to be recorded by other artists and remain a consistent presence in retrospective accounts of modern British and American popular music.
