Cliff Richard And The Shadows
Sir Cliff Richard (born Harry Rodger Webb, 14 October 1940, Lucknow, British India) is an English singer and actor, and the Shadows are an English instrumental rock group formed in London in 1958. Richard and the Shadows rose to prominence at the end of the 1950s and became leading figures in British rock and pop before the mid-1960s. Together they are noted for a run of hit singles, chart-leading films and a sound that helped establish home-grown UK rock and roll.
After moving to England as a child, Richard began performing in skiffle and rock and roll groups and secured a recording contract with EMI. His early success was closely tied to his backing band, initially known as the Drifters before adopting the name the Shadows; the classic line-up included Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Jet Harris and Tony Meehan. Their breakthrough came with “Move It” (1958), followed by a rapid series of hits including “Living Doll” (1959). As the Shadows developed a parallel career, their instrumental single “Apache” (1960) also became a major hit.
Richard and the Shadows reached their peak in the early 1960s, combining regular chart releases with film work that expanded their popularity. Richard scored multiple UK number one singles during the period, while the Shadows placed several instrumental recordings at the top of the charts, including “Wonderful Land” (1962). Their touring and television appearances made them central to British pop culture in the pre-Beatles era, and their clean-cut image contrasted with other rock and roll styles then associated with American performers.
From the mid-1960s onwards Richard increasingly pursued a solo career, maintaining chart success through several subsequent decades with singles such as “Devil Woman” (1976), “We Don’t Talk Anymore” (1979) and “Millennium Prayer” (1999). The Shadows continued as a touring and recording act and occasionally reunited with Richard for projects and concerts. They also represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1975 with “Let Me Be the One”. Richard and the Shadows continued to perform together on selected occasions, including reunion concerts and touring projects.
Richard is credited with sales of more than 250 million records worldwide, and both he and the Shadows rank among the most successful acts in British chart history. Richard was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1980 and was knighted in 1995, while the Shadows’ guitar-led instrumentals influenced later British rock musicians. Their recordings remain widely played and reissued, and their early catalogue continues to be referenced in accounts of the development of UK popular music.
