Bananarama
Bananarama are an English pop group formed in London in 1981. The original line-up consisted of Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey, and Keren Woodward. The group became one of the most successful female pop acts of the 1980s, known for their catchy melodies, dance-pop sound, and strong visual identity.
The trio achieved their first UK chart success with the single “It Ain’t What You Do (It’s the Way That You Do It)” in 1982, a collaboration with Fun Boy Three, which reached number five on the UK Singles Chart. Their debut album, Deep Sea Skiving, was released in 1983 and included the hit single “Shy Boy”, which broke into the US charts and helped establish the group internationally.
Bananarama reached their commercial peak in the mid to late 1980s with albums such as Bananarama (1984), True Confessions (1986), and Wow! (1987). The group achieved global success with the single “Venus”, a cover of the Shocking Blue song, which reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1986. Other well-known hits from this period include “Cruel Summer”, “Robert De Niro’s Waiting”, and “I Heard a Rumour”.
In 1988, Siobhan Fahey left the group to form Shakespears Sister, after which Bananarama continued as a duo. Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward maintained the group’s success into the 1990s with further charting singles and albums, adapting their sound to evolving pop trends. The duo remained active through the following decades, releasing new music and touring regularly.
Bananarama have achieved numerous chart records, including holding the Guinness World Record for the most chart entries by an all-female group. They have sold over 40 million records worldwide and continue to be recognised for their lasting influence on pop music.
With a career spanning more than four decades, Bananarama remain one of the most enduring and influential British pop groups. Their music continues to be celebrated by fans across generations.
