The Killers

The Killers are an American rock band formed in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2001. The group’s core members are Brandon Flowers (vocals, keyboards) and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. (drums), alongside long-term collaborators Dave Keuning (guitar) and Mark Stoermer (bass). Their music is commonly associated with post-punk revival, new wave, and alternative rock. The Killers are notable for a run of internationally successful singles and albums in the 2000s and 2010s, including one of the best-known rock songs of the era, “Mr. Brightside”.

Flowers and Keuning began writing and recording in Las Vegas before recruiting Vannucci and Stoermer to complete the line-up. The band achieved their breakthrough with the 2004 debut album Hot Fuss, which established their sound through singles such as “Somebody Told Me”, “All These Things That I’ve Done”, and “Mr. Brightside”. Their early success was particularly strong in the UK and Europe, where the band became regular festival headliners.

The Killers consolidated their profile with subsequent albums including Sam’s Town (2006) and Day & Age (2008), which produced widely played singles such as “When You Were Young”, “Read My Mind”, “Human”, and “Spaceman”. Their work during this period combined arena rock scale with synthesiser-led pop and rhythmic influences, contributing to the broader resurgence of guitar-led music in the mid-2000s. The band also received multiple major award nominations and won notable prizes in the UK music awards circuit.

Later releases included Battle Born (2012), Wonderful Wonderful (2017), Imploding the Mirage (2020), and Pressure Machine (2021), reflecting shifts between polished pop-rock and more reflective, narrative songwriting. Members have also pursued side projects and solo material, while the band has continued to tour internationally and maintain a prominent live reputation.

The Killers have sold millions of records worldwide and have remained a consistent presence on international charts for more than two decades. Their catalogue has been recognised through major award nominations, and their singles continue to receive extensive radio and streaming play. With an identifiable synthesis of rock and pop influences, the band are frequently cited as a defining act of early 21st-century mainstream alternative rock.
