Jamie Lawson (born 1 December 1975) is an English singer-songwriter, born in Plymouth, Devon. He is associated with acoustic pop and adult contemporary music and became widely known in the mid-2010s through a crossover hit single and a chart-topping album. Lawson is notable for the song “Wasn’t Expecting That” and for becoming one of a small number of singer-songwriters to reach number one on the UK album chart with a largely acoustic debut for a major label.

Lawson began writing songs while growing up in the south west of England and later spent formative years in Ireland, where he performed regularly and developed an audience on the live circuit. He released early independent recordings before gaining wider attention with the album The Pull of the Moon (2010). An earlier version of “Wasn’t Expecting That” first attracted significant interest in Ireland, building momentum through radio support and live performances.

His international breakthrough came after he signed to Gingerbread Man Records, the label founded by Ed Sheeran. A re-recorded version of “Wasn’t Expecting That” was released in 2015 and became a major UK hit, followed by his self-titled album Jamie Lawson (2015), which reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. The song later won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically, and Lawson supported large arena tours during this period, expanding his profile beyond the singer-songwriter circuit.

Lawson continued to release new material after his breakthrough, including the studio album Happy Accidents (2017). He later issued additional records such as The Years in Between (2019) and Little Weaknesses (2023), maintaining a focus on narrative songwriting and restrained, guitar-led arrangements. Alongside album releases, he has continued to tour and to appear at festivals and headline venues in the UK and Ireland.

While precise worldwide sales figures are not consistently published for Lawson’s catalogue, his mid-2010s success established him as a prominent figure within contemporary British singer-songwriter music. His best-known work remains in regular rotation on adult contemporary playlists, and “Wasn’t Expecting That” is frequently cited as a modern example of a story-driven pop ballad achieving mainstream chart success.
