Olly Murs (Oliver Stanley Murs) was born on 14 May 1984 in Witham, Essex, England. He is an English singer, songwriter and television presenter associated primarily with pop and pop-soul. He became widely known after appearing on the sixth series of The X Factor in 2009 and later established a chart career as a solo recording artist.

Murs worked in non-music employment before auditioning for The X Factor, where he finished as runner-up in 2009. He signed a record deal soon afterwards and released his self-titled debut album in 2010. The record produced UK hit singles including “Please Don’t Let Me Go”, and it was followed by extensive touring and media work. His early releases positioned him as a mainstream pop vocalist with frequent radio play.

His most commercially successful period came during the early-to-mid 2010s. Albums such as In Case You Didn’t Know (2011) and Right Place Right Time (2012) reached number one on the UK Albums Chart, and he scored UK number one singles including “Heart Skips a Beat” (featuring Rizzle Kicks), “Dance with Me Tonight”, “Troublemaker” (featuring Flo Rida) and “Wrapped Up” (featuring Travie McCoy). Alongside recording, he expanded into presenting, co-hosting The X Factor in the early 2010s.

Murs continued to release studio albums through the later 2010s, including 24 Hrs (2016) and You Know I Know (2018), while maintaining a profile as a touring artist and television personality. He returned with Marry Me in 2022, and he later released Knees Up (2025). Across these releases, his output remained focused on contemporary pop production, often incorporating collaborations and festival appearances.

Over the course of his career, Murs has achieved multiple UK number one singles and albums, along with a long run of top 10 hits. His work has been recognised through nominations and wins at UK music awards and sustained radio rotation. He is frequently cited in accounts of post-2000s UK pop for translating talent-show exposure into a decade-spanning recording career.
