James Bay (born James Michael Bay on 4 September 1990 in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England) is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist associated with rock and pop. He is notable for his breakthrough in the mid-2010s, including the UK number one album Chaos and the Calm and major British and international award recognition early in his career.

Bay began performing and writing songs in his teens and later developed a following through live shows and early releases before wider exposure in 2014. His early breakthrough came with the single “Hold Back the River”, followed by his debut studio album Chaos and the Calm (2015), which reached number one in the UK and established him as a prominent new British solo artist.

The peak of Bay’s initial success included major industry accolades and high-profile nominations. He received the BRIT Awards Critics’ Choice and later won British Male Solo Artist at the BRIT Awards 2016, while also receiving Grammy nominations connected to Chaos and the Calm and “Hold Back the River”.

Bay’s later career reflected a willingness to shift sound and collaborators. He released Electric Light (2018), followed by the EP Oh My Messy Mind (2019), and continued with further studio albums including Leap (2022) and Changes All the Time (2024), maintaining a steady output alongside touring and collaborative songwriting.

Bay’s legacy is primarily defined by his mid-2010s breakthrough as part of a wave of British guitar-based singer-songwriters who combined traditional songwriting with contemporary pop and rock production. His early UK chart achievements, BRIT Award recognition and Grammy nominations established a profile that has supported continued releases into the 2020s.
