David Gray (born David Peter Gray, 13 June 1968, Sale, Cheshire, England) is an English singer-songwriter whose work spans folk rock, alternative and electronic-influenced pop. After a long period as a cult artist with modest sales, he achieved major mainstream success in the early 2000s with the album White Ladder.

Gray grew up in Wales and began performing and writing songs while studying, later moving to London to pursue music full time. His early studio albums included A Century Ends (1993) and Flesh (1994), followed by Sell, Sell, Sell (1996), which helped establish his songwriting style but did not bring a major breakthrough. He self-financed and recorded White Ladder in 1998 and released it independently; after it was re-released by a larger label in 2000, the album began a slow climb in chart performance and public attention, supported by radio play and touring.

White Ladder eventually became a major commercial success, reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart in 2001 and producing singles including “Babylon”, “This Year’s Love”, “Please Forgive Me” and “Sail Away”. The album has been reported to have sold over seven million copies worldwide and became one of the longest-charting albums in UK chart history. Gray followed it with A New Day at Midnight (2002) and Life in Slow Motion (2005), both of which entered the UK album chart at number one, confirming his position as a leading British singer-songwriter of the period.

From the late 2000s onwards Gray continued to release studio albums and tour internationally while experimenting with production and arrangements. Later releases included Draw the Line (2009), Mutineers (2014) and Gold in a Brass Age (2019), alongside live recordings and compilation projects. In 2021 he released Skellig, recorded in Ireland, and in January 2025 he issued the album Dear Life on his own label, continuing a focus on reflective songwriting and contemporary pop textures.

Gray’s legacy is closely associated with White Ladder, which remains a widely referenced British album of the early 21st century. Its sustained chart presence and continued popularity have ensured the longevity of his best-known songs. While later releases have explored different sonic directions, his work is generally characterised by melodic songwriting, an expressive vocal style and a career that demonstrates how independently created recordings can achieve major mainstream success.
