Stephen Lawrence Winwood (born 12 May 1948, Birmingham, England) is an English singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose work spans rhythm and blues, rock, soul and pop. First known as a teenage vocalist in the 1960s, he later became a key figure in several major bands and a successful solo artist, noted for his distinctive voice and keyboard-led sound.

Winwood began performing professionally in his early teens and rose to prominence with the Spencer Davis Group, singing on mid-1960s hits including “Keep on Running” and “Gimme Some Lovin’”. In 1967 he co-founded Traffic, whose early recordings blended rock with jazz and folk influences. He was also a member of the short-lived supergroup Blind Faith in 1969 before returning to further work with Traffic and session collaborations through the early 1970s.

His peak commercial period as a solo artist arrived in the 1980s. Albums such as Arc of a Diver (1980) and Talking Back to the Night (1982) produced international singles including “While You See a Chance”. Back in the High Life (1986) became his most successful solo release and included “Higher Love”, which topped the US Billboard Hot 100 and won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year. He followed this era with further chart success, including “Roll with It”.

In later decades, Winwood continued recording and touring, while also reuniting with former collaborators. Traffic reconvened in the 1990s for an album and tour, and Winwood remained active as a live performer and guest musician. His catalogue has also remained visible through later reinterpretations and sampling, including the UK chart success of “Call on Me”, which drew on his song “Valerie”.

Winwood’s influence is closely associated with both British rhythm and blues and the wider evolution of rock and pop since the 1960s. Traffic were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, recognising the band’s impact on popular music. Back in the High Life alone has been reported as selling over five million copies, underlining the scale of his 1980s solo success.
