Culture Club are an English new wave and pop band formed in London, England, in 1981. The classic line-up consisted of Boy George (born George Alan O’Dowd, 14 June 1961, London), Roy Hay, Mikey Craig and Jon Moss. Blending new wave with soul and reggae influences, they became one of the most prominent British pop groups of the 1980s through a succession of international hit singles.

The band emerged from London’s early-1980s club scene and were quickly signed after building a profile through live performances and media interest. Their debut album Kissing to Be Clever was released in 1982 and included breakthrough singles such as “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me”, “Time (Clock of the Heart)” and “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya”. These releases established Culture Club in the UK charts and led to rapid success in North America and Europe.

Culture Club reached their commercial peak with Colour by Numbers (1983), which topped the UK album chart and produced the global hit “Karma Chameleon”, a number one single in the UK and the United States. The album generated additional international singles including “Church of the Poison Mind”, “Victims” and “It’s a Miracle”. In 1984 the group won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist and Brit Awards including Best British Group and Best British Single, and their image and music videos became closely associated with the MTV-era “Second British Invasion”.

Internal pressures and Boy George’s escalating drug use contributed to the band’s decline and an initial split in 1986. Members pursued separate projects, with Boy George developing a solo career, while Culture Club reunited at intervals from the late 1990s for touring and new recordings, including the album Don’t Mind If I Do (1999). After renewed touring activity in the 2010s, drummer Jon Moss left the group in 2018, with the remaining core members continuing to perform.

Culture Club have sold more than 50 million records worldwide and remain strongly associated with 1980s British pop. Their songs have continued to be used in film, television and compilation releases, supporting a long afterlife for their singles-led catalogue. The band’s mix of styles and their high media profile helped shape the period’s pop aesthetics, and their recordings continue to be cited in accounts of 1980s UK music history.
