Steven Van Zandt (born Steven Lento; 22 November 1950) is an American musician, songwriter, producer, and actor born in Winthrop, Massachusetts, and raised in New Jersey. Under the stage name Little Steven, he has fronted Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul, while also being widely known as a long-standing member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and for his acting role as Silvio Dante in The Sopranos. His work spans rock, R&B-influenced songwriting, and political activism.

Van Zandt became prominent in the New Jersey rock scene in the late 1960s and 1970s, contributing as a guitarist, arranger, and songwriter. His association with Springsteen and the E Street Band brought him international exposure, alongside work as a producer and collaborator with other artists. In the early 1980s, he established a parallel solo identity, crediting his work to Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul and developing a sound shaped by classic rock and soul traditions.

His debut album in this guise, Men Without Women, was released in 1982, followed by Voice of America in 1984. During the mid-1980s, Van Zandt’s profile expanded through activism, including his role in founding Artists United Against Apartheid and creating the protest project ‘Sun City’ (1985). The work was part of a broader cultural boycott movement and remains associated with international popular music’s response to apartheid-era South Africa.

From the late 1990s onward, Van Zandt maintained a multi-strand career. He became widely recognised as an actor through The Sopranos (1999–2007) while also continuing music and radio work, including the long-running show Little Steven’s Underground Garage. He returned periodically to touring and recording with Springsteen, and later revived the Disciples of Soul for new releases and performances, including Soulfire (2017) and Summer of Sorcery (2019).

Van Zandt’s legacy reflects his role across several areas of popular culture: as a guitarist and arranger in a major touring rock band, as a solo artist rooted in rock and soul traditions, and as an organiser of high-profile music activism. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the E Street Band, and his work continues to be cited in discussions of both American rock history and the political uses of popular music.
