Steps are a British pop group formed in the United Kingdom in 1997, consisting of Claire Richards, Ian “H” Watkins, Faye Tozer, Lee Latchford-Evans and Lisa Scott-Lee. They are associated with dance-pop and are notable for sustained UK chart success in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including multiple number 1 singles and albums.

The group’s early career developed rapidly after their debut single “5,6,7,8”, followed by a run of high-charting singles and albums that made them one of the most commercially successful UK pop acts of their era. Their first major album successes included Step One and Steptacular, and they built a reputation for choreographed performances and high-output single releases.

Steps’ peak commercial phase included a sequence of UK top five singles and a strong run of chart-topping albums, including the hit compilations that became defining releases of their late-1990s/early-2000s popularity. The Official Charts Company credits the group with two number 1 singles and four number 1 albums, reflecting lasting catalogue strength in the UK market.

The group announced a split in 2001 but reunited in 2011 through a television documentary and subsequent touring, returning to the top of the UK albums chart with The Ultimate Collection. From the late 2010s onwards, Steps continued recording new studio material and touring, marking a career evolution from a first-era pop phenomenon to a long-running nostalgia and new-release touring act.

Major reference sources commonly report that Steps have sold over 22 million records worldwide and have maintained UK chart visibility across multiple decades. Their legacy is associated with late-1990s British pop’s mainstream peak, reflected in continued compilation success and periodic high-profile returns.
