Status Quo are an English rock band formed in London in 1962, known for a long-running catalogue associated with boogie rock and hard rock. The group is notable for sustained chart success in the UK across several decades, including a large number of hit singles and albums.

The band developed through the 1960s, initially gaining attention with a more psychedelic-leaning sound before moving towards the riff-driven style that later became their hallmark. Their early chart success included “Pictures of Matchstick Men” (1968), and they built a strong album presence in the 1970s as they became a major touring act.

Status Quo’s peak era in the 1970s and early 1980s produced many of their best-known songs and established them as one of the UK’s most consistent chart acts. “Down Down” became a UK number 1 single in 1974, and the band accumulated extensive chart statistics over time, including long runs of consecutive charting studio albums.

The band continued releasing albums and touring in later decades, maintaining a prominent live presence and periodically returning to public attention through major events, including opening Live Aid at Wembley Stadium in 1985. Later years have involved ongoing touring activity alongside significant line-up changes, while the group’s core identity has remained connected to their 1970s–80s catalogue.

Status Quo received the BRIT Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music in 1991, reflecting their prominence in UK popular music history. Major reference sources commonly report worldwide sales of over 118 million records, and the band’s influence is tied to an enduring touring model and a recognisable, riff-based approach to rock that remains strongly associated with British popular culture.
