Janet Damita Jo Jackson (born 16 May 1966) is an American singer, songwriter, dancer and actress, born in Gary, Indiana. She first became known as a child performer in a prominent entertainment family and later established an independent career in pop and contemporary R&B. Janet Jackson is notable for a run of commercially successful albums from the mid-1980s onwards and for shaping the style and choreography of modern pop performance.

Jackson began working professionally as a child, appearing in television during the 1970s and early 1980s, before moving into music as a solo artist. Her first two albums, Janet Jackson (1982) and Dream Street (1984), attracted modest attention. Her breakthrough came with her third album, Control (1986), created with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, which produced a series of major singles and marked a decisive shift towards an assertive, rhythm-led sound and image.

Her commercial peak continued with Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989), which generated multiple high-charting singles over an extended period and combined dance-pop with socially themed material. In the 1990s, albums such as janet. (1993) and The Velvet Rope (1997) broadened her subject matter and helped establish her as a leading figure in contemporary pop and R&B. Across this era, her music videos and stage shows were widely broadcast and contributed to the growing importance of choreography and visual presentation in mainstream pop.

In the 2000s and 2010s, Jackson continued to release studio albums, including All for You (2001), Damita Jo (2004), 20 Y.O. (2006), Discipline (2008) and Unbreakable (2015), alongside extensive touring. She also maintained an acting career, with film work including Poetic Justice (1993) and appearances in television projects, while her live performances remained a central part of her public profile.

Jackson has sold over 100 million records worldwide and has received multiple major industry honours, including five Grammy Awards. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. Her catalogue, performance style and approach to pop production have been frequently cited as influences on later generations of artists in pop and R&B.
