Tom Petty was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist born on 20 October 1950 in Gainesville, Florida. He died on 2 October 2017 in Santa Monica, California. Petty was best known as the leader of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and he also worked as a solo artist and as a member of the supergroup the Traveling Wilburys. His music is commonly associated with rock and heartland rock, characterised by concise songwriting and a sound rooted in 1960s and 1970s rock traditions. He is notable for a long run of hit records and for maintaining a distinctive musical identity across several decades.

Petty began performing in Florida bands in the late 1960s and early 1970s before forming Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The group’s early breakthrough came with their 1976 debut album, which included “Breakdown”, followed by the more commercially successful Damn the Torpedoes (1979). That album, featuring songs such as “Refugee” and “Don’t Do Me Like That”, established Petty as a major figure in American rock and set the template for much of his later work.

His peak success extended through the 1980s and 1990s, combining Heartbreakers albums with acclaimed solo releases. Hard Promises (1981) continued the band’s prominence, while his solo album Full Moon Fever (1989) became one of his best-known works, including “Free Fallin’”, “I Won’t Back Down”, and “Runnin’ Down a Dream”. Petty also achieved major visibility through the Traveling Wilburys alongside Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne, and later Heartbreakers releases such as Into the Great Wide Open (1991) and Wildflowers (1994) broadened his critical standing.

In his later career, Petty continued to record and tour regularly, releasing albums with the Heartbreakers and maintaining an active live schedule. He undertook major anniversary projects and expanded archival releases, reflecting a sustained interest in his back catalogue. His final years included continued touring and recording plans, with his death shortly after the end of a major tour.

Petty’s recordings have sold in the tens of millions worldwide, with many songs becoming enduring staples of American rock radio. He and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, and he received multiple Grammy Awards. His legacy is commonly described in terms of songwriting craft, consistency, and a body of work that maintained mainstream popularity while preserving a classic rock approach.
