The Monkees are an American pop rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1965. The group’s classic line-up consisted of Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork. They were created for a television series of the same name and became a major chart act in the 1960s, noted for a run of hit singles and albums.

The band emerged through the casting process for the NBC television programme The Monkees, which began airing in 1966. Their early breakthrough combined weekly television exposure with commercially released recordings, including their debut album The Monkees (1966). Early hit singles such as “Last Train to Clarksville” and “I’m a Believer” established them as leading figures in mid-1960s American pop.

The Monkees’ peak success was concentrated in 1966 and 1967, when they achieved multiple chart-topping singles and albums and became closely associated with teen pop culture of the period. Over time, the group sought greater artistic control, leading to recordings in which they played their own instruments more prominently, including the 1967 album Headquarters.

After the television series ended in 1968, the group’s activities shifted toward touring and film work, including the feature film Head (1968). Line-up changes followed, and the band’s original run largely concluded by the end of the decade. From the 1980s onward, The Monkees reunited in various forms for tours and recordings, with different configurations depending on member availability.

The Monkees’ legacy is strongly linked to their pioneering blend of television and pop music marketing, as well as to an enduring catalogue of 1960s hits. Their work continues to be reissued and referenced in popular culture, and their model has been cited as an early example of multimedia pop stardom.
