Elvis Presley (born Elvis Aaron Presley, 8 January 1935, Tupelo, Mississippi; died 16 August 1977, Memphis, Tennessee) was an American singer and actor whose work encompassed rock and roll, pop, rhythm and blues, country and gospel. Rising to fame in the mid-1950s, he became one of the most significant cultural figures of 20th-century popular music. Presley is widely recognised for popularising rock and roll to a mass international audience.

Presley grew up in Mississippi and Tennessee and was influenced by gospel music, blues and country traditions in the American South. In 1954 he recorded for Sun Records in Memphis, beginning with “That’s All Right”, which attracted attention for its combination of country phrasing and rhythm-and-blues energy. His national breakthrough followed after signing with RCA Victor, with “Heartbreak Hotel” (1956) and a sequence of television appearances and touring that rapidly made him a major star.

His peak commercial period began in 1956 and continued through the late 1950s and early 1960s, producing numerous hit singles and albums and establishing a new model for pop stardom. Alongside recordings, he made a series of successful films, which became a major part of his public career during the 1960s. Although his output shifted towards film soundtracks for a time, he maintained a strong presence in the charts and remained widely recognised as a leading figure in American popular entertainment.

Presley’s later career included a major return to live performance, highlighted by the 1968 television special commonly known as the “’68 Comeback Special”. In the early 1970s he undertook extensive touring and a long-running Las Vegas performance schedule, and his 1973 broadcast Aloha from Hawaii became one of the most widely viewed music specials of its time. He continued recording and performing until his death in 1977.

Presley’s total record sales have been widely estimated at over 500 million worldwide, placing him among the best-selling artists in history. He received multiple Grammy Awards, particularly for his gospel recordings, and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll, Country and Gospel Music Halls of Fame. His long-term influence extends across popular music, film and celebrity culture, and his recordings remain a continuing reference point for rock, pop and American roots music.
