Christina Aguilera (born Christina MarĂa Aguilera, 18 December 1980, Staten Island, New York City, United States) is an American singer, songwriter and actress whose work spans pop, R&B and soul. Noted for vocal range and melisma, she became a prominent figure in late-1990s and early-2000s pop and later expanded into retro-inspired and Latin projects. She is widely associated with a series of chart hits and award-winning recordings.

Aguilera grew up in the Pittsburgh area and began performing in talent competitions before appearing on television, including The Mickey Mouse Club in the early 1990s. She secured a recording contract in the late 1990s and achieved a breakthrough with her debut album Christina Aguilera (1999), led by the number one single “Genie in a Bottle”. She followed this with Mi Reflejo (2000), a Spanish-language album that broadened her audience, and with singles such as “Lady Marmalade” (2001), recorded with Lil’ Kim, Mýa and Pink.

Her peak commercial period centred on the early-to-mid 2000s. The album Stripped (2002) marked a stylistic shift towards contemporary R&B and personal songwriting and included the international hit “Beautiful”. Back to Basics (2006) drew on early jazz, blues and soul influences and produced singles including “Ain’t No Other Man”. Across this period she won multiple Grammy Awards and became a frequent presence on international singles and albums charts, while her public image and music videos contributed to wider discussions of pop performance and persona.

From 2010 onwards Aguilera continued to release studio albums, including Bionic (2010), Lotus (2012) and Liberation (2018), alongside collaborations across pop and dance music. She expanded her media profile as a television coach and judge and pursued acting work, including the film Burlesque (2010). In the 2020s she returned to Spanish-language releases, including the EP La Fuerza (2022), reflecting an ongoing interest in Latin music traditions and contemporary pop production.

Aguilera has sold more than 75 million records worldwide and is among the best-selling vocalists of her generation. Her honours include multiple Grammy Awards, and her recordings have remained in circulation through streaming, radio and cover versions. Her combination of technical vocal style, genre experimentation and long-term mainstream visibility has influenced later pop and R&B singers and contributed to the continuing popularity of early-2000s pop repertoire.
