Pearl Jam are an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990. The group’s best-known line-up has included Eddie Vedder (lead vocals), Jeff Ament (bass), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar), Mike McCready (lead guitar) and Matt Cameron (drums). Emerging from the Pacific Northwest alternative scene, Pearl Jam became one of the most commercially successful bands associated with early 1990s grunge and are notable for sustained touring, activism and a long-running studio catalogue.

The band developed from earlier Seattle projects and began recording shortly after forming. Their debut album, Ten, was released in 1991 and grew into a major success as singles such as “Alive”, “Even Flow” and “Jeremy” gained rotation on radio and music television. Ten became the group’s most commercially successful album and was certified 13× platinum in the United States, helping establish Pearl Jam as a headline act during the genre’s mainstream rise.

Pearl Jam’s peak commercial era continued through the mid-1990s with albums including Vs. (1993) and Vitalogy (1994). During this period, the band achieved significant sales and toured extensively, while also becoming known for disputes over ticketing and the concert business. “Spin the Black Circle”, from Vitalogy, won a Grammy Award in 1996 for Best Hard Rock Performance, marking a major industry recognition alongside the band’s chart presence.

From the late 1990s onwards, Pearl Jam continued releasing studio albums and maintaining a consistent touring schedule, including records such as No Code (1996), Yield (1998), Backspacer (2009) and Lightning Bolt (2013). The band’s later work has included socially engaged themes and benefit performances, while their set lists and live approach have remained central to their public identity. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.

Pearl Jam’s record sales and touring history place them among the most prominent American rock bands of their generation, with Ten alone reaching multi-decade certification milestones. Their major honours include Grammy Awards and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Their long-term influence has been reflected in the continuing popularity of their 1990s recordings and the band’s model of sustained album releases, live performance and public advocacy over more than three decades.
