Tears for Fears are an English pop rock band formed in Bath, Somerset, England, in 1981 by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. Closely associated with 1980s synth-pop and new wave, the duo achieved international success with a series of major singles and albums and became a key act of the period sometimes described as the Second British Invasion.

Orzabal and Smith first worked together in earlier projects before establishing Tears for Fears and signing to a major label. Their debut album The Hurting (1983) became their breakthrough, reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart and producing hit singles including “Mad World”, “Change” and “Pale Shelter”. The record introduced a style that combined synthesiser-based arrangements with introspective themes, quickly expanding their audience beyond the UK.

Their peak global success arrived with Songs from the Big Chair (1985), which became a major international seller and produced several of their best-known songs. Singles from this era included “Shout” and “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, both of which became major hits in multiple countries. The Seeds of Love (1989) continued their prominence and included “Sowing the Seeds of Love”, reflecting a broader production approach and a shift in musical textures while sustaining their chart profile.

The duo’s working relationship became strained in the early 1990s and they were effectively separated for several years, with Orzabal continuing the band name for later releases. Tears for Fears reunited in the 2000s and returned to recording and touring, releasing Everybody Loves a Happy Ending (2004). After a long gap between studio albums, they released The Tipping Point (2022), which marked a significant late-career return to the charts. Subsequent releases included live and new material projects in the mid-2020s.

Tears for Fears have been reported as selling over 30 million albums worldwide and remain closely identified with 1980s pop-rock songwriting. In 2021 Orzabal and Smith received the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection, recognising the enduring status of their catalogue. Their music has remained prominent through continued radio play, reissues and use in film and television, contributing to long-term popularity across generations.
