The Stranglers
The Stranglers are an English rock band formed in Guildford, Surrey, in 1974. The classic line-up included Hugh Cornwell (vocals, guitar), Jean-Jacques Burnel (bass), Dave Greenfield (keyboards), and Jet Black (drums). Their music is associated with punk and new wave, though it also incorporates art rock, pop, and distinctive keyboard-driven arrangements. The Stranglers are notable for outlasting many of their punk-era contemporaries and for producing a series of enduring singles across several decades.
The band built a following through persistent live work in the mid-1970s and signed a recording contract as punk entered the mainstream. Their early breakthrough arrived in 1977 with the albums Rattus Norvegicus and No More Heroes, both released within the same year. Singles such as “Peaches” and “No More Heroes” established their presence on the UK charts and showcased their combination of aggressive rhythm sections, sardonic lyrics, and prominent keyboards.
The Stranglers’ peak commercial visibility extended from the late 1970s into the early 1980s. They continued to chart with material that broadened beyond punk’s initial confines, including “Always the Sun” and the harpsichord-led “Golden Brown”, which became one of their most recognisable songs internationally. Their ability to move between abrasive rock and more melodic, atmospheric songwriting contributed to their cultural longevity and differentiated them from many first-wave punk groups.
From the mid-1980s onwards, personnel changes shaped the band’s development, with Cornwell departing in 1990 and later vocal duties shared by other members and collaborators. Despite these shifts, The Stranglers continued to release studio albums and tour regularly. The deaths of Jet Black and Dave Greenfield marked major transitions, while Jean-Jacques Burnel remained a central figure in preserving the band’s identity and live presence.
Although precise worldwide sales totals are not consistently reported in a single figure, The Stranglers’ catalogue has generated sustained interest through compilations, reissues, and continued airplay. Their long-term influence is often described in terms of expanding punk’s musical range and demonstrating how the genre’s urgency could coexist with strong musicianship and pop sensibility. Their best-known songs remain fixtures in British rock culture, and their career is regularly cited as one of the most durable trajectories to emerge from the 1970s punk era.
