Bonnie Tyler (born Gaynor Hopkins, 8 June 1951, Skewen, near Swansea, Wales) is a Welsh singer associated with pop and rock music. Known for a distinctive husky voice, she achieved international success with a series of hit singles spanning the late 1970s and 1980s. Her best-known recordings include power ballads and soundtrack-related songs that became closely linked with the sound of the era.

Tyler began singing in local venues in South Wales before signing her first recording contract in the mid-1970s. Her early breakthrough came with “Lost in France” (1976), followed by wider international recognition with “It’s a Heartache” (1977), which charted strongly in Europe and North America. Early albums such as The World Starts Tonight (1977) and Natural Force (1978) established her as a chart artist, with her vocal style shaped in part by a period of vocal cord problems that altered her tone.

In the early 1980s Tyler entered her most commercially prominent phase after collaborating with producer and songwriter Jim Steinman. The album Faster Than the Speed of Night (1983) featured “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, which became a major number one single in several countries. She followed this with “Holding Out for a Hero” (1984), first released for the Footloose soundtrack, and continued working with Steinman on Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fire (1986). Other notable recordings from this period include the single “If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man)” (1986) and the album Hide Your Heart (1988).

Tyler continued recording through the 1990s and 2000s, releasing further studio albums and maintaining a touring career across Europe. Her later work included projects that revisited rock-oriented material and new collaborations, alongside periodic returns to public attention through television and live events. In 2013 she represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest with “Believe in Me”, and she continued to release new recordings in the years that followed.

Tyler’s signature songs have remained widely used in film, television and popular culture, contributing to the long afterlife of her 1980s repertoire. While her chart peaks were concentrated in the late twentieth century, her continued performance schedule and recurring media presence have sustained her profile. She is often identified as one of the most internationally recognised Welsh singers of her generation.
