Stereophonics are a Welsh rock band formed in Cwmaman, Rhondda Cynon Taf, in 1992. The group is fronted by singer and guitarist Kelly Jones and is notable for sustained UK chart success from the late 1990s onwards, including multiple number 1 albums and the 2005 UK number 1 single “Dakota”.

The band developed through the UK live circuit before releasing their debut album Word Gets Around (1997). Their breakthrough came with Performance and Cocktails (1999), which became a major UK success and established them as a prominent act within late-1990s British guitar music.

Stereophonics’ peak chart era spans the early 2000s and mid-2000s, including the album Just Enough Education to Perform (2001) and the single “Dakota”, which reached number 1 on the Official Singles Chart in 2005. The band’s Official Charts profile records nine UK number 1 albums, placing them among the most consistent album-chart acts in modern British rock.

In later years, Stereophonics continued releasing studio albums and touring, maintaining a steady UK audience and returning to number 1 with new material well into the 2020s. Their long-running release schedule has included both stylistic continuity with earlier rock releases and periodic production shifts reflecting changes in UK rock radio and streaming-era listening.

A widely cited estimate reported by major reference sources places Stereophonics’ worldwide record sales at around 10 million by the mid-2010s, underlining durable commercial reach beyond their initial breakthrough period. Their legacy rests on sustained UK album dominance, a recognisable vocal style and a catalogue that remains closely associated with Welsh rock success in the post-Britpop era.
