New Radicals
New Radicals are an American pop rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1997. The project centred on singer-songwriter and producer Gregg Alexander and musician Danielle Brisebois. They are best known for the international hit single “You Get What You Give” and for releasing one studio album, Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too.
Gregg Alexander had previously worked as a solo artist before forming New Radicals and signing with MCA Records. The band’s breakthrough came with the release of Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too in 1998, which introduced a sound drawing on pop, rock, and soul influences. “You Get What You Give” became the group’s defining single, receiving substantial international radio play and charting across multiple territories.
The group’s brief peak period occurred around 1998–1999, when their debut album and lead single established them as a visible presence in late-1990s alternative-leaning pop. Despite this profile, New Radicals disbanded in 1999, with Alexander shifting his focus away from performing as a band frontman.
In later years, Alexander developed a substantial career as a songwriter and producer for other artists. His credits include major pop and rock releases in the 2000s, and he received a Grammy Award for his work on Santana’s “The Game of Love”. The New Radicals name returned to public attention when the band reunited for a one-off virtual performance of “You Get What You Give” connected with the 2021 US presidential inauguration events.
New Radicals’ legacy rests primarily on the continuing popularity of “You Get What You Give” as a widely recognised song of the 1990s and on Alexander’s subsequent influence as a behind-the-scenes songwriter and producer. The band’s limited discography has contributed to a lasting reputation built around a single, enduring era of mainstream recognition.
