Toyah Wilcox
Toyah Ann Willcox (born 18 May 1958 in Kings Heath, Birmingham) is an English singer-songwriter, actress and television presenter associated with post-punk, new wave and pop rock. Performing under the name Toyah, she is notable for fronting the band Toyah during the late 1970s and early 1980s and achieving a run of UK chart hits alongside a parallel career in film, theatre and television.
Willcox trained and worked as an actor before her music career gained wider attention, appearing in films including Quadrophenia (1979) and Jubilee (1978). In the late 1970s she formed the band Toyah, signing to Safari Records and releasing early material that developed from the UK punk and new wave scene. The group’s early releases included Sheep Farming in Barnet (initially released in 1979 and later expanded) and The Blue Meaning (1980), establishing a growing audience ahead of their mainstream breakthrough.
Toyah’s peak commercial period came in the early 1980s. The band’s third studio album, Anthem (1981), became their most successful release, reaching number two on the UK Albums Chart and featuring the top-ten singles “It’s a Mystery” and “I Want to Be Free”. Willcox followed with further high-profile singles in the same era, including “Thunder in the Mountains”, and the band released The Changeling (1982) and Love Is the Law (1983) before she shifted focus to solo work.
From the mid-1980s onward, Willcox continued releasing music under her own name while expanding her work in television and theatre. Her later projects included anniversary tours revisiting her early catalogue, and she returned with further studio recordings, including the solo album Posh Pop (2021). Alongside music, she maintained a visible acting and presenting career across stage and screen.
Willcox’s legacy includes sustained recognition across multiple fields of entertainment. Her recording career includes multiple UK top 40 singles and a catalogue spanning more than four decades, with Anthem remaining a key document of early 1980s British new wave. She has also been noted for her longevity as a performer and for bridging popular music with theatre and television work.
