Gilbert O’Sullivan (born Raymond Edward O’Sullivan, 1 December 1946, Waterford, Ireland) is an Irish singer-songwriter who built his career primarily in the United Kingdom. Working in pop and soft rock, he became one of the most successful singer-songwriters of the early 1970s. He is notable for international hit singles including “Alone Again (Naturally)” and for a run of chart success that established him as a prominent songwriter of his era.

O’Sullivan moved with his family to England as a child and grew up in Swindon, Wiltshire. He developed an interest in songwriting in his teens and moved to London to pursue music, securing management and a recording contract in the late 1960s. His early breakthrough came with the single “Nothing Rhymed” (1970), followed by the debut album Himself (1971), which established his piano-led style and observational lyric approach.

His peak commercial success came in the early 1970s. “Alone Again (Naturally)” (1972) became a major international hit, reaching number one in the United States and charting strongly in the UK and elsewhere. The album Back to Front (1972) consolidated his profile and produced further well-known songs, and he continued to release successful singles including “Clair” (1972) and “Get Down” (1973), both of which achieved high UK chart positions. His recordings combined concise pop arrangements with a lyrical style that balanced humour, melancholy and narrative detail.

From the mid-1970s onwards O’Sullivan continued recording and touring, though his chart dominance diminished as popular music shifted. He released a steady sequence of studio albums across later decades and maintained a career as a live performer, often focusing on his 1970s catalogue alongside newer material. He also became known for legal disputes connected to rights and sampling, which brought renewed public attention to his work at later points in his career.

O’Sullivan’s record sales are strongly associated with his early-1970s singles and albums, which achieved multi-platinum success internationally. His honours include Ivor Novello Awards recognising his songwriting achievements. His influence is most often discussed in relation to the early-1970s singer-songwriter pop tradition and the craft of piano-based songwriting. His best-known songs remain widely broadcast and continue to be recorded and performed by other artists, supporting lasting popularity beyond his original chart era.
