Shirley Bassey

Dame Shirley Veronica Bassey (born 8 January 1937 in Cardiff, Wales) is a Welsh singer known for a powerful vocal style spanning pop, show tunes and orchestral balladry. She is widely recognised for recording several theme songs for the James Bond film series and for sustaining a high-profile performance career across multiple decades. 

Bassey began performing in the 1950s, developing her career through stage work and early recordings before achieving major chart recognition with songs such as “As I Love You” (1959). Her early success established her as a prominent British vocalist, leading to international engagements and higher-profile recording opportunities in the 1960s. 

Her peak era of international fame is closely associated with her Bond themes, including “Goldfinger” (1964), “Diamonds Are Forever” (1971) and “Moonraker” (1979). Beyond film themes, she maintained a strong presence in the UK charts and live circuit, and major reference sources describe her as having sold more than 140 million records worldwide across a career spanning more than 70 years.

From the 1980s onwards, Bassey continued releasing albums and performing in major venues, with periodic returns to public attention through televised appearances and special events. Her later career has been marked by continued live work and recognition for longevity, including UK chart milestones across successive decades. 

Bassey has received significant honours in the UK honours system, including appointment as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (2000) and inclusion in the 2024 New Year Honours as a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour.
