Tony Bennett
Tony Bennett (born Anthony Dominick Benedetto) was an American singer born on 3 August 1926 in Queens, New York City. He died on 21 July 2023 in New York. Bennett performed primarily in traditional pop and jazz, developing a vocal style influenced by the Great American Songbook and big band traditions. He is notable for a career that extended across eight decades, for major hit recordings in the mid-20th century, and for a late-career resurgence that introduced him to new generations of listeners.
After serving in the United States Army during the Second World War, Bennett pursued singing professionally and signed with Columbia Records in the early 1950s. His breakthrough came quickly with chart-topping recordings including “Because of You” (1951) and “Rags to Riches” (1953). He became a prominent figure in American popular music, performing on television and in major venues while developing a repertoire that combined romantic ballads with jazz phrasing.
Bennett’s most enduring signature song, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”, was released in 1962 and became closely identified with his public image and stage performances. Across the 1960s, he continued to record albums that balanced pop standards with jazz-oriented material, working with notable musicians and arrangers. His cultural impact was strengthened by a reputation for live performance and an approach that maintained classic repertoire through changing musical trends.
In later decades, Bennett experienced career fluctuations but remained active, and from the late 1980s and 1990s he achieved a widely noted revival. His increased visibility included television appearances and the album MTV Unplugged (1994), which helped reposition him for younger audiences without changing his musical format. He continued to record and perform extensively, including projects that highlighted jazz standards and duet work.
Bennett received major honours across his career, including numerous Grammy Awards, Emmy Awards, and recognition such as the Kennedy Center Honours. His later collaborations included high-profile recordings with contemporary artists, notably albums with Lady Gaga in the 2010s and early 2020s. While overall global sales totals are reported in varying figures, his catalogue has remained in continuous circulation, and his influence is associated with sustaining American popular song traditions in modern performance.
