Isley Brothers
The Isley Brothers are an American vocal and instrumental group formed in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1954 by brothers O’Kelly Isley Jr., Rudolph Isley and Ronald Isley. Their music spans doo-wop, soul, funk and R&B, and they are notable for sustained chart success across multiple decades.
The group’s early career developed from gospel and rhythm and blues performances into national recognition with “Shout” (1959). After label changes and evolving line-ups, they achieved a major breakthrough in the late 1960s with hits including “It’s Your Thing” (1969), which became a defining record of their early peak and helped establish their independence and sound.
The Isley Brothers’ most successful period extended through the 1970s, particularly after expanding into a full band that included younger brothers Ernie and Marvin Isley and brother-in-law Chris Jasper. This era produced influential albums and singles blending rock guitar, funk rhythms and soul harmonies, and the group became a major reference point for later R&B and hip-hop sampling and reinterpretation.
In later decades, the group continued recording and touring, with chart activity extending into the 2000s, including “Contagious” (2001). Their longevity has been noted in chart records, including recognition for placing music on the Billboard Hot 100 across six consecutive decades.
The Isley Brothers have been credited with sales of over 18 million units in the United States and have received major industry honours. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014, reflecting their long-term influence on popular music.
