It became the biggest hit of the year for 1972 – spending six consecutive weeks at number 1 and earning her a million-selling Gold disc. It finished the year as Billboard's top song of 1972. The First Take album also went to #1 and eventually sold 1.9 million copies in the United States. It was awarded the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1973. Clint Eastwood paid $2000 for the use of the song in the film and has remained friends since then.

Roberta Cleopatra Flack was born February 10, 1937 and is an American singer. She is best known for her #1 singles "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", "Killing Me Softly with His Song," "Feel Like Makin' Love"; and "Where Is the Love" and "The Closer I Get to You", two of her many duets with Donny Hathaway.She is the only solo artist to win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year on two consecutive years: "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" won at the 1973 Grammys as did "Killing Me Softly with His Song" at the 1974 Grammys.
