Phil Bennett Biography

Phillip Bennett OBE was born 24 October 1948 and is a former Welsh international rugby union fly half from 1969 to 1978. His flair and range of tricks, including his famous sidestep and swerve, meant he was a firm favourite with crowds.

He was born in Felinfoel, Carmarthenshire and  made his Wales debut on 22 March 1969 against France in Paris at the age of 20 when he became the first Welsh substitute in international rugby, replacing an injured Gerald Davies. Initially, he played in a number of positions including fullback and centre, but settled in the fly-half position in 1972.

He succeeded the legendary Barry John in that position and played for Wales between 1969-1978, making 29 appearances and scoring 166 points. He made his Wales debut in 1969, but it was not until Barry John's retirement from rugby in 1972 that he became a regular starter for his country.

He led Wales to the Five Nations Championship title, including the Grand Slam in 1978, after which he retired from Wales duty.

He also toured with the British Lions to South Africa in 1974, when they went unbeaten in 22 matches, and to New Zealand in 1977, and also made 20 appearances for the Barbarians between 1970 and 1980.

He played a pivotal role in the win over New Zealand in 1973, considered by many to be the best rugby union match ever played. He was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2015. In 2020, his try for Wales against Scotland in March 1977 was voted the greatest Wales try of all time.
