U2 are an Irish rock band formed in Dublin in 1976. The group consists of Bono (Paul Hewson), the Edge (David Evans), Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. Initially associated with post-punk and alternative rock, they are notable as one of the world’s best-selling music artists and for a sustained run of influential albums and large-scale concert tours.

The band formed while the members were teenagers and signed to Island Records before releasing their debut album Boy (1980). Early releases such as October (1981) led into a broader breakthrough with War (1983), their first UK number-one album, and politically themed singles including “Sunday Bloody Sunday”. Their growing international profile was reinforced by The Unforgettable Fire (1984) and high-profile live performances in the mid-1980s.

U2’s peak commercial and critical era is often associated with The Joshua Tree (1987), which became their defining global breakthrough and produced major singles including “With or Without You” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”. After the mixed reception to Rattle and Hum (1988), the band significantly reinvented their sound and image with Achtung Baby (1991) and the Zoo TV Tour, followed by further experimentation on Zooropa (1993) and Pop (1997).

From 2000 onward, U2 returned to a more conventional rock approach on All That You Can’t Leave Behind (2000) and How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb (2004), both of which were major successes. Their live activity remained central, including the record-setting U2 360° Tour (2009–2011). Later projects included Songs of Innocence (2014), Songs of Experience (2017) and Songs of Surrender (2023), alongside continuing high-profile performances.

U2 have sold an estimated 150–170 million records worldwide and have received major honours including 22 Grammy Awards. They were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Their long-term influence is often linked to their evolving sound, large-scale touring innovations and the continued presence of their 1980s and 1990s recordings in popular culture.
