Signed Guitars
The guitar is a plucked, fretted string instrument that became central to popular music and has been used across classical, folk, jazz, blues, rock and many other styles. Its most widely recognised forms include acoustic guitars, electric guitars and bass guitars, each shaped by changes in musical practice and instrument-making. The modern guitar is notable for its versatility, portability and ability to function as both a solo and ensemble instrument.
In its early development, the guitar’s origins are commonly traced to Spain in the early 16th century, with earlier related instruments existing across Europe and the Mediterranean. Over the following centuries, the instrument evolved through the Renaissance and Baroque periods, with changes in body shape, stringing and tuning. By the 19th century, standardised design approaches helped define the classical guitar, supporting repertoire development and the instrument’s establishment in concert and educational settings.
The guitar’s peak expansion in mass popular culture arrived in the 20th century, particularly with the growth of American blues and folk traditions and the later emergence of rock and roll. The development and widespread adoption of amplification and electric guitar designs transformed the instrument’s role, enabling greater volume, sustain and tonal variation. From the 1950s onwards, electric guitar performance became a defining feature of many major popular genres, while acoustic guitar remained central to singer-songwriter traditions and popular accompaniment.
In later decades, the guitar continued to evolve through new manufacturing methods, digital effects, modelling technologies and recording techniques. The instrument remained prominent in heavy metal, punk, indie and pop-rock scenes, while also appearing in hip hop, electronic music and film scoring through sampling and hybrid production. At the same time, classical and fingerstyle traditions persisted, maintaining continuity with older performance practices.
The guitar’s legacy includes its status as one of the most widely played instruments in the world and a long-running symbol of modern popular music. Its broad range of types and playing techniques has supported constant reinvention, and the instrument remains central to musical education, live performance and recording culture internationally.
