Led Zeppelin were an English rock band formed in London in 1968. The group comprised vocalist Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham. Drawing on blues and folk influences alongside a heavy, guitar-driven approach, they became one of the defining acts of 1970s rock and are widely credited with helping shape the development of hard rock and heavy metal.

The band emerged from the final touring incarnation of the Yardbirds, with Page assembling a new line-up in 1968. After early live dates in the UK and the United States, Led Zeppelin released their debut album, Led Zeppelin, in January 1969. Later the same year, Led Zeppelin II achieved major international success and included songs such as ‘Whole Lotta Love’ and ‘Ramble On’, establishing the band as a leading album-focused rock act.

Led Zeppelin’s most commercially successful period spanned the early to mid-1970s. Their untitled fourth album (commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV) became one of the best-selling albums in history and featured ‘Stairway to Heaven’, alongside tracks including ‘Black Dog’ and ‘Rock and Roll’. Subsequent releases such as Houses of the Holy (1973) and the double album Physical Graffiti (1975) expanded their sound and included enduring songs such as ‘Kashmir’. They achieved eight consecutive UK number-one albums and six US number-one albums, becoming one of the best-selling artists of all time.

In the later 1970s, the band continued to tour and release new work, including Presence (1976) and In Through the Out Door (1979), amid increasing pressures and health issues. Following the death of John Bonham in 1980, Led Zeppelin disbanded. The remaining members have reunited only occasionally for special performances, including the 2007 Ahmet Ertegun tribute concert in London with Jason Bonham on drums.

Led Zeppelin have sold an estimated 200 to 300 million records worldwide. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and have received major honours including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Their catalogue remains central to the history of rock music, with their approach to recording, touring, and album presentation continuing to influence subsequent generations of artists.
