Foo Fighters are an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1994 by musician Dave Grohl (born David Eric Grohl, 14 January 1969, Warren, Ohio). Initially created as a one-person recording project following Grohl’s work as the drummer of Nirvana, the band developed into a long-running touring and recording group associated with alternative rock and post-grunge. They are notable for sustained mainstream success across several decades and for multiple Grammy Awards.

Grohl recorded the first Foo Fighters material largely alone, releasing the debut album Foo Fighters (1995) and then assembling a full band to perform live. The group’s early breakthrough came with The Colour and the Shape (1997), which included singles such as “Everlong”, “My Hero” and “Monkey Wrench” and established their sound as guitar-driven rock with melodic hooks. The band continued building an international audience through constant touring and follow-up releases, including There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999).

Foo Fighters reached a sustained peak in the 2000s and 2010s, combining high chart positions with critical recognition. Albums such as One by One (2002), In Your Honour (2005) and Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (2007) produced major singles and supported large-scale tours. Wasting Light (2011) marked a further high point, debuting at number one in multiple countries and winning Grammy Awards, with later releases including Sonic Highways (2014) and Concrete and Gold (2017) continuing their chart presence.

In later years the band expanded into documentary and series projects while continuing studio work and live activity. The death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022 led to a pause in touring, followed by tribute concerts and a return to recording. Foo Fighters resumed releasing new music and continued to perform live, with later projects reflecting both the band’s established style and a more reflective lyrical approach.

Foo Fighters have sold tens of millions of records worldwide and are among the most commercially successful rock bands of the modern era. They have won multiple Grammy Awards, including repeated recognition in rock categories, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. Their legacy includes maintaining a mainstream audience for guitar-based rock through periods dominated by pop and hip-hop, and their catalogue remains a staple of contemporary rock radio and festival programming.
