Bon Jovi
Bon Jovi are an American rock band formed in Sayreville, New Jersey, in 1983. The group was founded by singer Jon Bon Jovi (born John Francis Bongiovi Jr., 2 March 1962, Perth Amboy, New Jersey) and are best known for combining hard rock and pop-rock with arena-ready choruses. They became one of the defining mainstream rock acts of the late 1980s and have maintained an international audience across several decades.
Jon Bon Jovi’s early recordings led to a record deal and the formation of the classic line-up with guitarist Richie Sambora, keyboardist David Bryan, drummer Tico Torres and bassist Alec John Such. After the release of the band’s debut album Bon Jovi (1984), they gained momentum with 7800° Fahrenheit (1985) and then achieved a major breakthrough with Slippery When Wet (1986). The album produced global singles including “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Livin’ on a Prayer”.
Bon Jovi consolidated their peak commercial period with New Jersey (1988), which topped charts in multiple countries and generated further hit singles such as “Bad Medicine” and “I’ll Be There for You”. In the early 1990s the band moved towards a more mature sound on Keep the Faith (1992), while the ballad “Always” became one of their best-known later singles. Their touring profile, stadium-scale live shows and sustained radio presence made them central to the era’s rock mainstream.
From the mid-1990s onwards, Bon Jovi continued releasing new material while adapting to changes in popular music. Crush (2000) marked a renewed commercial peak and introduced the band to a new audience through “It’s My Life”. Later albums included Have a Nice Day (2005), Lost Highway (2007) and Bon Jovi (2020), alongside extensive world tours. Line-up changes in the 2010s, including Sambora’s departure, did not end the group’s activity, with Jon Bon Jovi remaining the consistent focal point.
Bon Jovi have sold more than 100 million records worldwide and are among the best-selling rock bands in history. The band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, reflecting their long-term impact on popular rock music. Their catalogue continues to be associated with 1980s stadium rock while remaining present in later film, television and live performance culture.
