Manchester United 1968 European Cup Signed Football Programme
This is a stunning item that is an absolute must for all United fans, a fabulous memento of the 1968 European Football Cup Final where United became the first English team to become European Football champions. The road to become European champions was a bumpy one for United and they probably would have won it sooner had it not been for the Munich air disaster. Manager Matt Busby rebuilt the side following that tragedy and this mount features the original hand signed autographs of 14 of the heroes who helped Busby reach his goal.
A replica match day programme from this game is surounded by the original autographs of:
Bobby Charlton, Nobby Stiles, David Herd, Pat Dunne, Bill Foulkes, Pat Crerand, Tony Dunne, Shay Brennan, John Connolly, George Best, John Aston & John Fitzfatrick on a lined sheet of the paper. This paper was signed in 1968 and it is shows its age (see the picture) but is still a great item.
The original autographs of David Sadler and Alex Stepney are mounted seperately at the botton, either side of a a photo of Charlton lifting Uniteds first ever European cup.
The whole display is approx 16x20" and has been mounted on a red mount board and is encased in a silver effect frame.
A fantastic display that would grace any collection of football memorabilia, especially Manchester United fans.
1968 EUROPEAN CUP FINAL BIBLIOGRAPHY;
The 1968 European Cup Final was the 13th European Cup Final, a club football tournament for the champions of European leagues. The match was held at Wembley Stadium, London, on 29 May 1968, between Manchester United of England and Benfica of Portugal. Manchester United beat the Portuguese champions 4-1 after extra time.
The first half passed without incident, but, 8 minutes into the second half, Bobby Charlton opened the scoring for Manchester United with a rare headed goal. But, the lead only lasted for 22 minutes before Jaime Graça scored for Benfica. The score remained at 1-1 until the end of normal time, forcing the match into extra time, but it might not have ended that way had Alex Stepney not made a crucial save when one-on-one with Eusébio.
Benfica's players were clearly flagging when George Best put United in the lead again three minutes into extra time.He picked up the ball 25 yards from goal after the Benfica players failed to deal with Stepney's long kick downfield, and broke into the penalty area and dribbled round the goalkeeper and rolled the ball into an empty net. Brian Kidd, who was celebrating his 19th birthday, added United's 3rd a minute later, before Charlton rounded off the scoring before 100 minutes had been played.
The win meant that they became the first English team to win the European Cup, just a year after Celtic had become the first British team to do so. The win also marked the culmination of Manchester United's 10 years of rebuilding after the 1958 Munich air disaster, in which 8 players had been killed and manager Matt Busby had been left fighting for his life. Captain Bobby Charlton and Bill Foulkes who had both survived the crash played in the game.
A classic piece of MUFC football memorabilia. A must for any true Man United fan. 100% original hand signed autographs from the Manchester United Team that won the 1968 European Cup, along with a replica programme from that night along with a photo of Bobby Charlton lifting the Cup.
