He was part of the Champions Forever famous five consisting of Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton and Larry Holmes who were at the height of their powers during the 1970's, when each fighter was winning and losing a Heavyweight championship off each other. Joe Frazier Joseph William "Joe" Frazier was January 12, 1944 and died November 7, 2011, he also known as Smokin' Joe and was a professional boxer, Olympic gold medalist and Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion, whose professional career lasted from 1965 to 1976, with a one-fight comeback in 1981.
He emerged as the top contender in the late 1960s, defeating opponents en route to becoming Undisputed Heavyweight Champion in 1970, and followed up by defeating Muhammad Ali by unanimous decision in the "Fight of the Century" in 1971. Two years later he lost his title when he was knocked out by George Foreman. He fought on, but his last world title challenge came in 1975,when he was beaten by Ali in their brutal rematch. He retired in 1976 following a 2nd loss to Foreman. He made a comeback in 1981, fighting just once, before retiring again. He is an inducted in both the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame.He was diagnosed with liver cancer in September 2011 and died November 7, 2011.
